Tjot Iri was a Dutch post within the geconcentreerde linie of Groot-Atjeh, the terminus of the great road running from Tjot Rang and the point to which Luitenant Neelmeyer returned before daybreak after his night ride of March 1896 to warn the outposts of the defection of Teukoe Oemar.

Neelmeyer’s ride

Hooijer recorded that Neelmeyer, having set out in the evening from Pakan Kroeng Tjoet in the company of Toekoe Tjoet and some of his followers to warn the garrisons of Toengkoeb and Tjot Rang, volbracht zijn voornemen ongestoord en was vóór het aanbreken van den dag in Tjot Iri, een post in onze linie, terug, juist even voordat de communicatie met de door hem gewaarschuwde posten werd verbroken — carried out his intention undisturbed and was back in Tjot Iri, a post in the Dutch line, before daybreak, just before communication with the posts he had warned was cut.

Roads

The great road from Tjot Rang to Tjot Iri, along which the lieutenant had been able to escape, was subsequently occupied by the enemy, as was the road to the right towards Toengkoeb; an Achehnese pedati (ox-cart) is shown moving along it beneath two high coconut palms in the plate of the terrain around Tjot Rang. An inner path also ran from Tjot Rang over Ateuh to Tjot Iri, which Hooijer noted counted as something particularly easy by the standards of that country.

Account from Verstege’s Een beroep op het Nederlandsche volk (1886)

Verstege names Tjot Iri one of the eighteen posts of the line of 1885; on 8 November 1885 an escort of seven men was attacked between Oleh Karang and Tjot Iri, with a loss of one dead and one wounded (see Guerilla raids inside the concentration line (1885)).
