A passer was the periodic market of an Achehnese kampong (village), and in the Dutch outpost system of Groot-Atjeh an index of the political disposition of the surrounding population.
The passer at Biloel
The clearest instance in De verlaten posten in Groot-Atjeh is the passer under the great tree at Biloel. On the morning of 29 March 1896, when Toekoe Djohan was to have assembled a thousand warriors and a thousand coolies there for the action against Lamkrak, verscheen er des morgens niemand op de passer onder den grooten boom, zelfs de politie-oppasser (orderly) niet — nobody at all appeared at the passer under the great tree, not even the police oppasser. It was the first sign of the defection.
Other passers
The Dutch temporary post at Tjot Rang was quartered in an old Achehnese fortification on a height bij de passer te Tjot Rang. Toekoe Moesa Anaq Batee attacked the passer-goers travelling between Lambarih and Anagaloeng in 1896.
