Bijlage XVI — Verlieslijst Atjeh-1896 — the casualty list for the Dutch forces in Atjeh during 1896 — is preserved as the sixteenth annex (Bijlage XVI) of Kruisheer’s ATJEH ‘96 — Tweede Deel on pp. 212–218. The list records the names, ranks, and regimental numbers (algemeen stamboeknummer) of the Dutch officers, NCOs, and men killed, wounded, or missing in action during the operations of 1896, and is the principal primary source for the assessment of Dutch casualties in the second semester of 1896. The list covers the operations of both the first semester (covered in Volume 1) and the second semester (covered in Volume 3) of 1896, and includes the casualties of the surprise of Ana’ Galoeng of 29 June 1896 — the opening operation of the second semester.

Significance

Bijlage XVI is significant in the documentary record of ATJEH ‘96 — Tweede Deel as the principal primary source for the assessment of Dutch casualties in 1896. The list — covering the operations of both the first and second semesters — records the human cost of the Atjeh-oorlog in 1896 at the level of the individual soldier, and provides the basis for the assessment of the relative cost of the various operations of the year. The list includes the casualties of the surprise of Ana’ Galoeng of 29 June 1896 — including the death of Eur. serg. Verhey, No. 24109 and the wounding of Luit. Rijnen, Luit. Wagener, Luit. Dijkstra, and Kapitein Graafland — and the casualties of the excursie of 7 July 1896 — including the wounding of luit.-adj. Hoekstein en luit. Meerburg, beiden licht — voorts 3 Eur. fus. en 3 Eur. cavaleristen. The list is the documentary record of the human cost of the Dutch pacificatie (pacification) of 1896 — the cost which Kruisheer’s Besluit (Conclusion) would seek to justify with the claim that men in 1896 den rechten weg tot pacificatie insloeg.
