Loman & Funke was a Dutch publishing house of ‘s-Gravenhage (The Hague) that published, in 1896, J. A. Kruijt’s historical brochure De Atjeh-Oorlog: Kort Overzicht van Oorsprong, Verloop en Gevolg as a volume in the Boekerij van het Koloniaal Instituut (Library of the Colonial Institute) series. The firm thereby served as the publisher of one of the earliest sustained Dutch historical critiques of the conduct of the Atjeh-oorlog.
The Publication of De Atjeh-Oorlog (1896)
Loman & Funke published J. A. Kruijt’s De Atjeh-Oorlog in 1896, at ‘s-Gravenhage, as a volume in the Boekerij van het Koloniaal Instituut series of the Koloniaal Instituut of Amsterdam. The brochure, of seventy-nine pages, was the principal Dutch-language historical critique of the conduct of the Atjeh-oorlog from 1873 to 1896, written in the immediate aftermath of the defection of Teuku Umar of March 1896.
Significance
Loman & Funke’s publication of Kruijt’s brochure placed it in the institutional context of the Koloniaal Instituut — the principal Dutch scholarly institution for the study of the colonies — and ensured its dissemination to the Dutch colonial-policy audience at the Hague. The brochure’s publication in the Boekerij van het Koloniaal Instituut series aligned it with the institutional critique of the Dutch conduct of the war that the Koloniaal Instituut was uniquely positioned to articulate.
