N.V. Boekhandel Visser & Co was a Dutch colonial publishing house based in Weltevreden, the colonial quarter of Batavia, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. N.V. Boekhandel Visser & Co is the publisher of ATJEH ‘96 (1913) by Kapitein A. Kruisheer — the principal printed primary source for the operational history of the Atjeh-oorlog in 1896.
Role as publisher of ATJEH ‘96
The title-page of both the 1e Deel and the Tweede Deel of ATJEH ‘96 carries the imprint Weltevreden: N.V. Boekhandel Visser & Co, 1913. N.V. Boekhandel Visser & Co was, in 1913, one of the principal colonial publishers of military and colonial literature in the Dutch East Indies, specialising in the publication of works by serving and former officers of the K.N.I.L. and of the colonial civil administration. The 1e Deel of ATJEH ‘96 was issued with two maps and four portraits (of Gouverneur-Generaal Jhr. C. H. A. van der Wijck, Gen.-Maj. C. Deykerhoff, Lt.-Gen. Vetter, and Teuku Umar); the Tweede Deel was issued with three maps and six portraits (including Gen.-Maj. De Moulin, Kolonel Stemfoort, Kolonel Van Vliet, and Lt.-Kol. Van Heutsz).
Significance
N.V. Boekhandel Visser & Co is the publisher of ATJEH ‘96 and one of the principal colonial publishers of military and colonial literature in the Dutch East Indies in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The imprint of the firm on the title-pages of both volumes of ATJEH ‘96 makes it the publisher of record for the principal Dutch-language source on the 1896 campaign of the Atjeh-oorlog.
