Events
- Atjèh’s accession to the Negara Islam Indonesia — the armed rebellion proclaimed on 21 September 1953 by Teungkoe Moehamad Daoed Beureu-éh, by which Atjeh joined the Negara Islam Indonesia led by the Imam Kartosuwirjo and took up arms against the Republic of Indonesia. The staatkundige ontwikkeling survey (Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen, revised ed. 1955) records the outbreak in its chronological survey under “Augustus 1953 — Onder leiding van Daoed Beurouch breekt een opstand uit in Atjeh” — In August 1953, under the leadership of Daud Beureu’eh, a revolt breaks out in Atjeh — the August date reflecting the beginning of the unrest, while the formal proclamation followed on 21 September 1953.
- The reconquest by Colonel Simbolon of the Bukit Barisan territorial command proceeded through October and November 1953 — Seulimeum and Bajeunen on 3 October, Meureudu on 10 October, Blangkedjeren and Biruën on 20 October, and finally Takengon on 24 November 1953.
- On 1 August 1953 the cabinet of Ali Sastroamidjojo was formed, from which the Masjumi was excluded — the political trigger that, according to Alers, removed Daud Beureu’eh’s last motive for patience.
- On 1 August 1953, Kahar Muzakkar, the guerrilla leader in South Celebes, joined the Negara Islam Indonesia.
- On 20 October 1953, Mr. S. M. Amin took office as the new Governor of North Sumatra.
