The following account is drawn from the parliamentary history of the Dutch Second Chamber as narrated by Vermeulen in the colonial section of the 1955 fourth revised edition of Rengers’s *Schets*.
1955 is the publication year of the second wholly revised edition of Nederlanders over de Zeeën: 350 Jaar geschiedenis van Nederland buitengaats, edited by Dr. H. J. de Graaf, with the cooperation of Prof. G. Gonggrijp, W. R. Menkman and Prof. Jhr Dr P. J. van Winter (Utrecht: W. de Haan N.V., MCMLV). The 1955 edition is the source of the present Aceh Wiki History articles derived from the book.
The 1955 edition
The 1955 second edition of Nederlanders over de Zeeën is, in the source’s imprint, the “Tweede geheel herziene druk” (second wholly revised edition). The book comprises seven chapters covering the 350-year history of Dutch maritime enterprise from the late sixteenth century to the Indonesian revolution. Chapter II (by De Graaf) covers the Dutch in East Asia and the VOC; Chapter III (by De Graaf) the transition from Company to Government; Chapter IV (by Gonggrijp) the Indies under the State and as part of the Kingdom; Chapter V (by De Graaf) the war with Japan; Chapter VI (by De Graaf) the Indies after the Japanese surrender; Chapter VII (by Van Winter) South Africa in the Dutch period.
The Atjeh-relevant content
The Atjeh-relevant content of the 1955 edition is concentrated in:
- The introductory survey of pre-Company Asia (Chapter II.1, pp. 99-100), which situates sixteenth-century Atjeh in the wider context of Muslim-state formation in the archipelago.
- The chapter on the VOC in the western part of the archipelago (Chapter II.5, pp. 154-159), which covers Atjeh’s trade with Gujerat and Suratte, the elephant-fight illustration of 1613, and the VOC’s conflict with Atjeh on Sumatra’s Westkust.
- The chapter on the Indies under the State (Chapter IV, by Gonggrijp, pp. 197, 205, 209, 216-219), which covers the 1824 London Treaty, the 1857 contract, the 1871 Sumatra-tractaat, the Atjehoorlog of 1873-1904, and the post-1904 consolidation.
- The chapter on the ethical policy period (Chapter IV, p. 238), which covers the post-Atjeh establishment of effective Dutch authority.
- The chapter on the Indonesian revolution (Chapter VI, p. 267), which records the 1948 Atjeh exemption.
Significance
1955 is significant for the encyclopedia of Acheh history because it is the publication year of the source from which the present Aceh Wiki articles are derived. The 1955 edition is the canonical citation form for Nederlanders over de Zeeën in Aceh Wiki references.
