J. Doorenbos was a Dutch Malay scholar whose edition of the *Asrār al-ʿārifīn* of Hamzah Pansuri — cited by Voorhoeve in the apparatus criticus of the 1955 edition of Raniri’s two Malay treatises — made the principal surviving work of the Wujudiyyah mystic of Acheh accessible to European scholarship. The Doorenbos edition is the principal European source for the text of Hamzah’s Asrār al-ʿārifīn, and is the form in which Voorhoeve cites the work in his apparatus to the *Tibjān*.
The edition of the Asrār al-ʿārifīn
Doorenbos’s edition of the *Asrār al-ʿārifīn* of Hamzah Pansuri is the principal European source for the text of Hamzah’s treatise. The edition is cited by Voorhoeve in the apparatus criticus of the *Tibjān* for the parallel passages to Raniri’s quotations from Hamzah — quotations that Raniri inserts, in the Tibjān, into his translation from the *Tamhīd* of as-Sālimī in order to refute them. The Doorenbos edition is also cited by Voorhoeve for the Asrār al-ʿārifīn at p. 142 (and elsewhere), and for Hamzah’s dissertation on p. 59.
Significance
Doorenbos’s edition of the *Asrār al-ʿārifīn* is the principal channel by which the text of Hamzah Pansuri’s treatise was made accessible to European scholarship. The edition made it possible for Voorhoeve to compare Raniri’s polemical citations with Hamzah’s own text, and so to follow the controversy over the unity of being in Acheh in the 1630s with a precision rare in the religious history of the early modern Malay world. The Doorenbos edition is also cited by Van Nieuwenhuijze in his dissertation Sjamsu’l-Dīn van Pasai (1945).
Role as editor of the Malay translation of the Burda
In a sixteenth-century Malay translation of the Burda of Al-Busiri, Doorenbos is named as the co-editor who worked with Hamzah Fansoeri on the edition. Footnotes credit him with providing the basis for textual improvements, for example: “De tekestverbetering is ingegeven door Hamzah Fansoeri ed. J. Doorenbos bl. 46: lemah manis terlalu njaman.” His involvement reflects the collaboration between Malay and Dutch scholars in the study of Malay manuscripts during the colonial era, particularly in the production of critical editions of religious texts. Notes such as these show corrections of archaic Malay spellings and Arabic glosses drawn from the Doorenbos edition of the *Asrār al-ʿārifīn* of Hamzah Pansuri.
