The text’s language, orthography, and editorial notes by figures such as Hamzah Fansoeri and J. Doorenbos point to an early modern Malay context of Islamic manuscript production. This century saw the expansion of Islamic scholarship in the Malay world, the growth of surau and pesantren networks, and the increasing circulation of Arabic devotional works in Malay translation, exemplified by the Burda manuscript.
