Philippus Samuel van Ronkel — published as Ph. S. van Ronkel — was a Dutch Malay scholar whose 1944 article “Rānīrī’s Maleische geschrift: Exposé der religies” in BKI 102, pp. 461 ff., provided the first detailed synopsis of the *Tibjān fī maʿrifat al-adyān* of Nūruddīn ar-Rānīrī and remained, until the 1955 edition of Voorhoeve, the principal European study of the work. Van Ronkel was also the cataloguer of the manuscript of the Tibjān designated A in Voorhoeve’s apparatus — Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen, Amsterdam, Anthropol. Afd. no. 0/271 — which he described in Meded. Afd. Volkenkunde no. 7 (1935), p. 158.
The 1944 article on the Tibjān
Van Ronkel’s 1944 article — “Rānīrī’s Maleische geschrift: Exposé der religies” — was composed in wartime under difficult conditions, and Voorhoeve notes that it requires much correction of printing and other errors. Van Ronkel’s opinion that the manuscript reproduced in the 1955 edition exhibits numerous lacunas, and that the (announced) enumerations of religions, sects, and dogmata are often defective, is however not shared by Voorhoeve: the absence of the third sect of the “Copts” is, Voorhoeve shows, indeed the result of a small lacuna in the Leiden manuscript, but the absence of the fourth group of the Tanāsuḥiyya is to be attributed to Raniri’s source — the *Tamhīd* of as-Sālimī — and not to the manuscript. The article nonetheless remained, until the 1955 edition, the principal European study of the Tibjān.
The cataloguer of manuscript A
Van Ronkel was also the cataloguer of the Tibjān manuscript designated A in Voorhoeve’s apparatus — Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen, Amsterdam, Anthropol. Afd. no. 0/271. He described the manuscript in Mededeelingen van de Afdeeling Volkenkunde van het Koninklijk Koloniaal Instituut no. 7 (1935), p. 158. The manuscript is on paper watermarked Leveratto (Churchill no. 573: 1794); it is a slightly more careful copy than the Leiden manuscript B, and ends at p. 105 r. 7 of B. Van Ronkel was also the cataloguer, in BKI 103, p. 599, of the Achehnese manuscript of the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde at The Hague, designated D in Voorhoeve’s apparatus — the Achehnese adaptation of the Tibjān by Teungku Harõn (c. 1929).
