P. J. van Winter — Prof. Jhr Dr P. J. van Winter — was the author of Chapter VII of Nederlanders over de Zeeën (1955 second edition), titled Zuid-Afrika in de Hollandse tijd (South Africa in the Dutch period). Although his chapter does not directly concern Atjeh, his contribution to the collaborative volume is part of the editorial frame within which the Atjeh-related chapters (II, IV) are situated.
Authorship of Chapter VII
In the 1955 edition of Nederlanders over de Zeeën, Van Winter was responsible for Chapter VII — the chapter covering the Dutch period at the Cape of Good Hope (1652-1795, with the brief 1803-1806 reoccupation). The chapter is, in the volume’s structure, the South-Atlantic counterpart to De Graaf’s Chapter II on the Indies and Menkman’s Chapter I on America and West Africa.
The collaborative volume
The 1955 edition of Nederlanders over de Zeeën was a collaborative work edited by Dr. H. J. de Graaf. Van Winter was one of the four contributors alongside De Graaf, Gonggrijp and Menkman.
Significance
Van Winter’s significance for the encyclopedia of Acheh history is indirect: he is one of the four contributors to the 1955 Nederlanders over de Zeeën, the source of the present Aceh Wiki articles. His chapter on South Africa provides the comparative frame within which the Indies chapters are situated.
