W. R. Menkman — W. R. Menkman — was the author of Chapter I of Nederlanders over de Zeeën (1955 second edition), titled Nederland in Amerika en West-Afrika (The Netherlands in America and West Africa). Although his chapter does not directly concern Atjeh, his contribution to the collaborative volume is part of the editorial frame within which the Atjeh-related chapters (II, IV) are situated.
Authorship of Chapter I
In the 1955 edition of Nederlanders over de Zeeën, Menkman was responsible for Chapter I — the chapter covering the 350-year Dutch maritime enterprise in the Atlantic: the Caribbean, Suriname, Berbice, Demerara, Essequibo, the Gold Coast of Africa, and the brief Dutch Brazil episode. The chapter is, in the volume’s structure, the Atlantic counterpart to De Graaf’s Chapter II on the Indies.
The collaborative volume
The 1955 edition of Nederlanders over de Zeeën was a collaborative work edited by Dr. H. J. de Graaf. Menkman was one of the three contributing authors alongside De Graaf and Gonggrijp; the chapter on South Africa (Chapter VII) was contributed by Prof. Jhr Dr P. J. van Winter.
Significance
Menkman’s significance for the encyclopedia of Acheh history is indirect: he is one of the four contributors to the 1955 Nederlanders over de Zeeën, the source of the present Aceh Wiki articles. His chapter on the Atlantic provides the comparative frame within which the Indies chapters are situated.
