Major W. Spiering was a Dutch military officer who commanded the 3rd Battalion of Infantry (bat. Inf. III) of the KNIL, which had been stationed at Sabang (the island off the north-western tip of Atjeh) before the transfer of Dutch military responsibilities to the Indonesian armed forces (APRIS). On 30 May 1950, a company of the battalion was handed over to the APRIS at Stabat.

Transfer ceremony

The handover ceremony at Stabat was conducted by Lt.-Col. Dom and Major Kartakusuma. Major Spiering transferred command of the battalion to Major Kartarusuma, while the adjutant Arpassa was promoted to captain and assumed command of a company. The adjutant-under-officer Salamony was promoted to first lieutenant and would act as company commander.
