Ir. F. J. J. Dootjes was a Dutch engineer and archivist who served as Secretary-Archivist (Secretaris-Archivaris) of the Oostkust van Sumatra-Instituut (East Coast of Sumatra Institute) in Amsterdam. He was the compiler of Deli-Figuren uit de jaren 1950 t/m 1952, published as Mededeling No. 37 of the Institute in 1953, as well as its predecessor Deli-Data 1938-1951.
Work
Dootjes’ compilations of “Deli-Figuren” and “Deli-Data” are valuable reference works documenting the personnel, institutions, organisations, and events of the East Coast of Sumatra — including the Atjeh region — during the late colonial, Japanese occupation, and early independence periods. They record the mutations (transfers, arrivals, departures, deaths) of civil servants, military personnel, plantation officials, and other figures active in the region, providing a prosopographic resource for the social and administrative history of northern Sumatra.
