Djeuram is a place in Seunagan on the Westkust of Aceh, om zijn fanatieke klewangaanvallen beruchte — notorious for its fanatical klewangaanvallen — whose bivak was the seat of the Kompeuni’s authority in the Seunagan-country. It was at Djeuram, in April 1904, that the largest klewangaanval in the history of Atjeh fell upon the colonne-Campioni; it was at Djeuram, in 1906, that Schmidt served as lieutenant and won the vertrouwen of the Atjehers; and it was at Djeuram that the bivak was trotsch op het bezit van twee zulke merkwaardige dieren — proud of the possession of two such remarkable animals, the chicken and ape mascottes of Tjoet Ali after his death in 1927.
The April 1904 klewangaanval
Boven al deze klewangaanvallen, uitgevoerd met eene doodsverachting welke geen grenzen kende, staat de attaque op de colonne-Campioni in April 1904, de grootste klewangaanval uit de historie van Atjeh — above all these klewangaanvallen, carried out with a contempt for death that knew no bounds, stands the attack on the colonne-Campioni in April 1904, the greatest klewangaanval in the history of Atjeh. Campioni, the colonne-commandant, was at the spits in the neighbourhood of Djeuram in Seunagan when hundreds of enemies stortten zich als de hel over de colonne (threw themselves like hell over the colonne) and virtually wiped out the spits. Luitenant Van der Vlerk — at that moment a step aside from the colonne, having his puttee fastened by his dardanel — was saved by that accident. Van der Zee was killed in the same affaire; his body was brought to Meulaboh. Als iemand bestemd is om dertig jaar later, als gepensioneerd kolonel, commandant van de Burgerwacht in Rotterdam te worden, sneuvelt hij niet als luitenant in Seunagan.
Schmidt as lieutenant, 1906
In 1906 Schmidt served als luitenant te Djeuram in het toen uiterst roerige Seunagan, waar hinderlagen en klewangaanvallen aan de orde van den dag waren — as lieutenant at Djeuram in the then extremely restless Seunagan, where ambushes and klewangaanvallen were the order of the day. Een commandant die er niet leelijk in wilde loopen moest terdege uit de oogen zien en zorgen dat hij op de hoogte bleef van wat er onder de menschen omging — a commander who did not want to come to grief had to keep his eyes open and stay informed of what was going on among the people. The great antagonist was Tengkoe Poetih, whose spion-network reached into Schmidt’s keudé. Tengkoe Poetih had onder zijn spionnen een handelaar die in de keudé een tokotje had, een zeer slimme snaak — Tengkoe Poetih had among his spies a trader with a little shop in the keudé, a very sly fellow. The episode of the hagedis met een kuif — the crested lizard that Schmidt fed with bread-crumbs and consulted in mock conversation — gave Schmidt his reputation among the Atjehers of having alle ongeziene Heeren van het bosch, en van de bronnen, en van de dieren, aan een touwtje — all the unseen Lords of the forest, and of the springs, and of the animals, on a string.
Tjoet Patimah and the rantej boei
Tjoet Patimah, widow of Teukoe Keumangan — die zich een jaar of dertig geleden in Djeuram zoo stevig tegen ons te weer stelde (who had so stoutly opposed us at Djeuram thirty years ago) — told Zentgraff that Schmidt was one of those rare men who carried a rantej boei (the magic bead of invulnerability), waardoor hij niet alleen onkwetsbaar was doch ook een helder oog had in het donkerste geheim — by which he was not only invulnerable but also had a clear eye into the darkest secret. The rantej boei — een steentje dat zich, naar Atjehsch geloof, door kalkafzetting in den bek van een wild varken vormt en dit dier beschermt tegen lans en kogel van den jager — is a stone that, by Atjehsche belief, forms by lime-deposit in the jaw of a wild boar and protects that animal against lance and bullet of the hunter.
The mascottes of Tjoet Ali
After Tjoet Ali was killed by Gosenson’s brigade near Aloeë on 25 May 1927 — his poesaka rentjong identified, his mascottes the chicken and the ape sitting beside the bodies — the maréchaussée’s ontfermden zich over de kip en zetten het aapje op den draagstok van een dwangarbeider (took charge of the chicken and set the ape on the carrying-pole of a convict-labourer). Het heele bivak Djeuram was trotsch op het bezit van twee zulke merkwaardige dieren, en ‘s avonds overtuigde men zich dat de kip op den stok zat, bij haar vriend — the whole bivak Djeuram was proud of the possession of two such remarkable animals, and in the evening they made sure the chicken was on the perch with her friend. The ape could no longer bear the sight of an Atjeher; als er een in de buurt kwam krijschte het kwaadaardig, en liet het scherpe gebit zien. The chicken zat overal, kakelde overal rond, ook als iedereen voor een hooge in de houding stond. Het is heel lang zoo gegaan, en ouden van dagen spreken er nog met eenig respect over. Tjoet Ali sliep in dat graf tegenover het marschbivak Kandang, en zijn aapje sliep met de kip. Ueber allen Gipfeln ist Ruh.
Significance
Djeuram is the place of the largest klewangaanval in the history of Atjeh, of the bivak at which Schmidt won his Atjehsche vertrouwen, of Tjoet Patimah’s testimony to the rantej boei, and of the chicken-and-ape mascottes of Tjoet Ali in the years after his death. Ueber allen Gipfeln ist Ruh — above all the peaks there is rest.
Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)
On 29 December 1917 Gosenson, returning with a few marechaussée from an elephant hunt undertaken at the request of the inhabitants of Goenòng Balè, was gravely wounded in the attack organised by Tgk. Poeti’. Teukoe Agam, whom H. J. Schmidt brought to Daja in 1914, had formerly been head of his intelligence service at Djeuram. In 1926 Teukoe Keumangan acknowledged to du Croo that T. Radja Tampo’ had been present on the pasar at Djeuram.
