Kandang is a marschbivak on the Westkust of Aceh, in the Bakongan-country, opposite which lies the grave of Tjoet Ali — the great panglima of the Westkust resistance of 1925–1927. The grave was built by the maréchaussée’s themselves met wat metselwerk en een plaat — with some masonry and a plate — and on the stone stands the name Tjoet Ali.
The end of Tjoet Ali, 25 May 1927
At the end of May 1927 Gosenson got word that a small bende had been seen by a man gathering wood in the forest-edge, three hours’ walk from Kandang. The chabar came in at 10 o’clock at night, and dienzelfden nacht ging Gosenson er op uit, om in het terrein te zijn vóór de sporen zouden zijn verdwenen — that same night Gosenson went out, to be in the terrain before the tracks should have vanished. By dawn the men were at the place where the little troop had last been seen; it had rained heavily, and Gosenson liet zijn mannen telkens uitzwermen in groote bogen die een paar honderd meter verder weer bij elkaar kwamen, als de lippen van een nijptang — let his men swarm out repeatedly in great arcs that came together again a few hundred metres further, like the lips of a pair of pincers. At length the sharp eye of one of the spoorzoekers saw, on the sandy bank of a beekje, the already much-faded print of a human foot. The bekas was followed; at twelve o’clock the place was found where the bende had sat. The next morning the nose was on the spoor; from a high point in the bushes a good sight was had down to the Aloeë, where two temporary hutjes stood. As the descent was made a stone came loose and plunged noisily into the Aloeë; the man from the first hutje flew out, immediately followed by the woman. Gosenson heard him cry: Ka bala! — there is misfortune — and the soldiers rushed on, firing on the enemies who were seen. Het was over in een paar minuten. Zes lijken, waarvan twee vrouwen; zij werden uit het water op het droge gebracht.
The mascottes and the body
Gosenson immediately had the impression that Tjoet Ali must be among them, also because among the dead was Imam Sabi, die nog altijd het rottan-korfje over het gat der wond in zijn rug had hangen (who still always wore the rattan basket over the hole of his wound in his back). Bovendien was zijn poesaka rentjong bekend, omdat hij er in de kampongs dikwijls het volk mee dreigde; het was een groote rentjong met bijzonderen handgreep (besides, his poesaka rentjong was known, because he often used it to threaten the people in the kampongs; it was a great rentjong with a peculiar handle). Beside the corpses sat a chicken and a young ape; het waren de mascottes van het bendehoofd en zijn vrouw — they were the mascottes of the bandit-chief and his wife. The maréchaussée’s ontfermden zich over de kip en zetten het aapje op den draagstok van een dwangarbeider (took charge of the chicken and set the ape on the carrying-pole of a convict-labourer). The body of Tjoet Ali was brought to the kampong, and from there to Kandang.
The grave at Kandang
Met het overschot van het lijk werd gehandeld zooals de Atjeher dit den sjahid doet, en de maréchaussée’s zelf maakten het graf voor Tjoet Ali met wat metselwerk en een plaat — with the remains of the body was done as the Atjeher does to the sjahid, and the maréchaussée’s themselves made the grave for Tjoet Ali with some masonry and a plate. The Atjehers who see the grave by the road near Kandang may think what they like of it, and that will not be very pleasant for the Dutch. Het graf zal hen niet weerhouden, morgen opnieuw te beginnen, maar het heeft in allen gevalle geleerd dat de Kaphé en zijn maréchaussée’s weten, wat den sjahid toekomt, boven: dat de Kompeuni altijd aanwezig is — the grave will not stop them, but it has at least taught that the Kaphé and his maréchaussée’s know what is due to the sjahid — above all, that the Kompeuni is always present.
The ape and the chicken
The little ape was taken on by the brigade and lived long among the maréchaussée’s; na eenigen tijd kon het dier geen Atjeher meer zien; als er een in de buurt kwam krijschte het kwaadaardig, en liet het scherpe gebit zien — after a time it could no longer bear the sight of an Atjeher; when one came near it screeched maliciously and showed its sharp teeth. The chicken, onbezorgd, zat overal — ook als iedereen stond at attention voor een hooge officier — unconcerned, sat everywhere — even when everyone stood at attention for a senior officer. They were brought to the bivak at Djeuram, en ‘s avonds overtuigde men zich dat de kip op den stok zat, bij haar vriend — and in the evening they made sure the chicken was on the perch with her friend.
Significance
Kandang is the place where the body of Tjoet Ali lies vlak vóór het marschbivak, the grave built by the maréchaussée’s themselves with masonry and a plate, the answer to his famous Hò ka Kompeuni — Where is the Kompeuni? The chicken and the ape that were his mascottes lived on with the brigade at Djeuram — onbezorgd the chicken, kwaadaardig the ape at the sight of an Atjeher.
