Pang Lateh was a determined resistance fighter (panglima) and the energieke medestrijder of Pang Nanggroë in the Keureutoë mountains. In September 1905, together with Pang Nanggroë, he brought Tjoet Meuthia and the young T. Radja Sabi — the adelaarsjong — from the vlakte to the bergen, where they established themselves along the upper Djambo Ale in a wild but free land.

Role in the resistance

Pang Lateh was one of the leading figures of the verzetspartij that formed around Tjoet Meuthia and her son after the execution of T. Tjhi Toenong on 5 March 1905. The bende, initially under the opperste leiding of Teukoe Ben Pira (a brother of Tjoet Meuthia), came entirely under Pang Nanggroë when Pira became sjahid in 1907. Pang Lateh was one of the chief assistants throughout this period.

Death and burial

Pang Lateh was killed at a later occasion (the book does not specify the date) and was buried behind the keudé of Lho Soekon, within a wooden kandang enclosure. He lies there vlak naast Pang Nanggroë, who was killed on 26 September 1910 by sergeant Van Slooten’s brigade in the Paja Tjitcem moeras. As Zentgraff writes: „So in death they are together again, as on many an old campaign.“

The two graves within their kandang enclosures remain at Lho Soekon as memorials to the resistance.

Account in du Croo’s Generaal Swart (1943)

Pang Nanggròë’s body, carried back after his death in the Paja Tjitjém on 26 September 1910 so that the population might recognise it, was buried behind the keudé within a covered wooden enclosure, a kandang, “and right beside it, likewise in such a kandang, rests the body of Pang Latèh … So in death they are together again, as on many an old campaign.”
