Van der Vlerk — luitenant Van der Vlerk, thans gepensionneerd kolonel te Rotterdam, commandant van de Burgerwacht — was the Dutch maréchaussée-officer whose geluk at Djeuram in Seunagan in April 1904 became one of Zentgraff’s stock examples of the caprice of war. He is listed in the 1930 40-year jubilee photograph of the Korps Maréchaussée as „1. Luit. Kol. Van der Vierk” — the spelling varies between Vierk and Vlerk.
The puttee incident at Djeuram, April 1904
Van der Vlerk liep met kapitein Campioni, de colonne-commandant, bij de spits in de buurt van het om zijn fanatieke klewangaanvallen beruchte Djeuram in Seunagan, toen hij voelde dat een zijner puttee’s was losgeraakt — was walking with captain Campioni, the colonne-commandant, at the point in the neighbourhood of Djeuram in Seunagan, notorious for its fanatical klewang-attacks, when he felt that one of his puttee’s had come loose. He ging een weinig terzijde van de doormarcheerende colonne staan om de puttee’s door zijn dardanel wat vaster te laten binden (stepped a little aside from the marching colonne to have his dardanel — batman — bind the puttee’s somewhat tighter) toen honderden vijanden zich als de hel over de colonne stortten en vrijwel de geheele spits neersloegen (when hundreds of enemies hurled themselves like hell over the colonne and struck down virtually the entire point). Als iemand bestemd is om dertig jaar later, als gepensionneerd kolonel, commandant van de Burgerwacht in Rotterdam te worden, sneuvelt hij niet als luitenant in Seunagan — if a man is destined, thirty years later, to become a retired colonel commanding the Burgerwacht in Rotterdam, he does not fall as a lieutenant in Seunagan. The puttee incident saved his life.
Pursuit of Tgk. di Mata Ië: misled for 14 days
The Heer der bronnen Tgk. di Mata Ië was the most elusive of the Paja Bakong oelama’s. Bijna alle goede patrouilleleiders in die jaren hebben weleens zijn spoor gevonden; Van der Vlerk en Behrens zaten hem soms dicht op de hielen, doch altijd ontkwam hij en dit maakte de faam zijner mystieke krachten nog grooter — almost all good patrol-leaders in those years sometimes found his spoor; Van der Vlerk and Behrens sometimes sat close on his heels, but he always escaped, and this made the fame of his mystic powers still greater. After the death of Tjoet Meuthia at the Kroeëng Peutoeë on 25 October 1910 — the krijgsbedrijf of Mosselman — the Tiro-oelama’s tried to move the bende southward through the Boekit-paja’s. False chabars were sent to Leuhong to clear the way; zij hebben kapitein Van der Vlerk met de „majjans” een dag of 14 laten ronddolen in de bergen ten Oosten, hem daar op een paar oude, reeds verlaten ladangs gebracht, en zoodoende hadden zij zoowel den doortocht naar beneden als den terugweg voor de bende voorbereid en veilig gemaakt — they kept captain Van der Vlerk with the majjans wandering for fourteen days in the mountains to the east, brought him there on a few old, already-abandoned ladangs, and so had both the passage down and the way back for the bende prepared and made safe.
The “majjans” brigade
„Majjans” — Malay mayang, the mayang-palm shoot or, in soldier-slang, something like „the lot of ‘em” — was the nickname of Van der Vlerk’s brigade or detachment. The use of the term in the report of the Tiro-oelama’s misleiding (deception) shows that it was a recognized brigade-name in the division.
Significance
Van der Vlerk survived the worst klewangaanval of the war to become one of the senior survivors of his generation — a gepensionneerd kolonel in Rotterdam, commandant van de Burgerwacht. His puttee is Zentgraff’s symbol of the lot that decides life and death in the colonne: a man taken out of the spits by a loose puttee survives the greatest klewangaanval of the Atjeh-oorlog; a man not so taken out does not. He is among the kameraden named at Scheepens’s deathbed.
