The source book is a 1956 Dutch comparative ethnography of the water-buffalo in the Indonesian archipelago. Kreemer (a former Kontroleur B.B. on Sumatra’s Westkust and the author of the two-volume monograph Atjèh, 1922-23) draws extensively on his own field experience in northern Sumatra, on Christiaan Snouck Hurgronje’s De Atjehers (1893-94) and Het Gajoland en zijne bewoners (1903), and on the lexicographical works of Hazeu (Gajosch-Ned. Wdbk.) and Djajadiningrat (Atjehsch-Ned. Wdbk.).
