Description
Full title of the village religious leader in Atjeh. Hereditary, but the holder must be a religious, pious Muslim, preferably literate. If no suitable male heir exists in the teungkoe lineage, the dignity passes to a male relative in the sideline or even to an outsider. Together with the keutjhi’ he is the joint decision-maker in the gampong, representing the hokom (holy law) while the keutjhi’ represents the adat.
Significance
The term teungkoe meunasah is recorded by Jongejan as part of the cultural, administrative, or institutional vocabulary of Aceh.
