Kemala was a place in Groot-Atjeh where, in August 1884, the dynastic candidate Toeankoe Mohamad Daoed was declared of age; afterwards the Atjehnese regarded him as their lawful Sultan (see Herstel van het sultanaat). The fact is recorded by Verstege in the conclusion of his 1886 pamphlet, where he uses it to show that any retreat with honour by handing the land over to a pretender had become impossible, “the true crown Allah has already caused us to regain” being the answer that every Atjeher would give.
