Toekoe Moeda Baij was a chief of the XXVI Moekims who, after the Dutch conquest of the XXVI Moekims of 1–4 July 1879, fled with other chiefs and a following of some two hundred notables to the valley of Lamtoba at the foot of the Goudberg, as recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889). Whether this Toekoe Moeda Baij is identical with the chiefs writing of the same name — the Toekoe Moeda Baid recorded in other accounts of the war — the book does not decide; the spelling of the narrative is Baij.
The flight to Lamtoba
From the interrogations held in the bivak at Lamtoba the Dutch learned that Toekoe Moeda Baij, Toekoe Nja Hoessin and Toekoe Paya, with other chiefs and about two hundred persons of rank from the XXVI Moekims, had arrived at Lamtoba and had settled in the valley — not within the kampongs, but outside them in small encampments which the local population had not dared to oppose, the materials for the camps being taken from the kampongs. It was for the hospitality thus shown to the chiefs of the XXVI Moekims that the district was to be punished. On the approach of the troops the greater part of the refugees withdrew higher up, to the mountain kampong of Kepaja Doewa, or else towards Selimoen, three day-marches further in the valley of the Atjeh-rivier; their encampments within the Lamtoba valley were several times located by the Dutch reconnaissances, but the occupants succeeded each time in making off in time, until the night march of the column surrounded a kampong at daybreak and carried off sixty-seven persons. The chiefs themselves the book traces no further than the retreat towards Selimoen; of the persons of rank who still defied the summons after Selimoen’s fall, other accounts place them beyond the Dutch reach at Kemala, in the interior south of Pedir.
