Toekoe Nja Hoessin was a chief of the XXVI Moekims who, after the Dutch conquest of the XXVI Moekims of 14 July 1879, fled with Toekoe Moeda Baij, Toekoe Paya and a following of some two hundred persons of rank to the valley of Lamtoba, as recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889).

Circuit of flight

The chiefs and their following, the Dutch learned at Lamtoba, had established themselves outside the kampongs in small encampments which the local population had not dared to hinder, the materials for the camps being drawn from the kampongs themselves. On the approach of the troops they withdrew higher up — to the mountain kampong of Kepaja Doewa, or to Selimoen, three day-marches further in the Atjeh-valley. It was on account of the reception given to Toekoe Nja Hoessin and his companions that the Lamtoba column had been sent to punish the district; the continued refusal of the chiefs to submit was the immediate cause of the march order against Selimoen of 11 August 1879.
