Toekoe Paya was a chief of the XXVI Moekims who, after the Dutch conquest of the XXVI Moekims of 14 July 1879, fled with Toekoe Moeda Baij, Toekoe Nja Hoessin and a following of some two hundred persons of rank to the valley of Lamtoba, as recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889). The name recurs in the military history of these years — a heuvel-benting called of Toekoe Paja had been stormed in November 1876 east of Groot-Atjeh — but the book of 1889 nowhere identifies the XXVI Moekims chief with its namesake; the identity must remain unasserted.

Circuit of flight

With his companions he had, as the interrogations in the bivak at Lamtoba disclosed, settled outside the kampongs in a small encampment, the local population not daring to oppose the refugees; and on the approach of the troops he withdrew higher up, towards Kepaja Doewa or towards Selimoen, three day-marches further in the valley of the Atjeh-rivier. It was above all the reception given to Toekoe Paya and the other chiefs of the XXVI Moekims that made the district’s punishment obligatory in the judgement of the Militaire Bevelhebber; and the persistence of the chiefs in the fastnesses beyond Selimoen gave the occasion for the Selimoen expedition itself.
