Second Dutch Expedition to Aceh was the Dutch land-and-sea expedition commanded by Jan van Swieten which sailed from Batavia in late 1873, landed on the Acehnese coast, captured the Missigit and Kraton of Aceh, and established a reduced occupation at Kota Radja.
Course
The force assembled amid a blockade and a cholera epidemic. It sailed on 20 November 1873, concentrated before Aceh by 1 December 1873, and faced severe sickness aboard its transports. Its operations were intended to succeed the earlier unsuccessful expedition, but its military gains did not end the wider Aceh War.
Significance
The episode belongs to the continuing Aceh War and the contested consequences of the Capture of the Kraton of Aceh.
