Landing and march to the Aceh River (1873) was the opening overland operation of the Second Dutch Expedition to Aceh, in which Dutch forces moved from the coast toward the Aceh River and occupied the camp at Penajong.
Course
The operation followed debates over landing sites including Krueng Raba, Lepong, and the coastal sector near Gighen. Intelligence warned of muddy routes, river crossings, fortified banks, and Acehnese fieldworks. The move established the base from which the Dutch attacked the religious and royal centres.
Significance
The episode belongs to the continuing Aceh War and the contested consequences of the Capture of the Kraton of Aceh.
