Cholera in the Second Dutch Expedition was the epidemic that afflicted transports of the Second Dutch Expedition to Aceh before and after their arrival off Aceh in 1873.
Course
The disease had already appeared aboard vessels before anchors were raised. Quarantine constrained the provisioning ship and delayed departure indirectly; aboard the Sloet van den Beele and Willem Kroonprins der Nederlanden, carrying parts of the 3rd battalion from Central Java, it proved especially destructive. Jan van Swieten emphasized this emergency as a material condition of the campaign.
Significance
The episode belongs to the continuing Aceh War and the contested consequences of the Capture of the Kraton of Aceh.
