Failed peace negotiations of December 1873 was the unsuccessful Dutch effort to obtain a settlement during the Second Dutch Expedition to Aceh before the assault on the Missigit.
Course
The Dutch dealt through Mas Soemoe Widikdjo, who requested information about their forces and armament. The failure left both sides preparing for further fighting and became central to Jan van Swieten’s later argument that political communication had been mishandled.
Significance
The episode belongs to the continuing Aceh War and the contested consequences of the Capture of the Kraton of Aceh.
