Toengkoep was a locality in Groot-Atjeh whose fortified mosque — the missigit Toengkoep — had been one of the principal fortified points of the XXVI Moekims, and which became in September 1879 the permanent garrison of the 6e Bataljon Infanterie after the battalion’s return from the Lamtoba-Selimoen expedition, as recorded in W. Cool and G. B. Hooijer’s Eene schoone bladzijde uit Atjeh’s geschiedenis (1889).
The torrent of the 26 Moekims and the garrison of 1879
In the conquest of the XXVI Moekims of 1–4 July 1879, the missigit Toengkoep had been numbered among the chief fortified points — with the missigit Melajoe, the missigit Boëng Tjala and the missigit Lambaroe — taken at the first storm or already evacuated. On the return of the expedition of 1879, in conformity with received orders, the 6th Battalion marched immediately after its arrival at Kota Radja to Toengkoep, “om van dezen post de vaste bezetting uit te maken” — to form the permanent garrison of this post. The march completed what the campaign had begun: many of the men could not perform it and fell out along the road, and within a few days a great part of the already thinned corps was received into the hospital. From the third and last division of the returning column, landed at Oleh-leh on 3 September 1879, the section of guns with one section of mortars likewise marched to Toengkoep, the other mortar section to Lambaroe. The post must be distinguished from the Toengkoeb of the III/XIII Moekims, whose bentengs figure in the operations of the 1890s.

Verstege names Toengkoep the eastward point from which the line of 1885 was shortened to Lamjong at the execution of the concentration; the post was evacuated between 12 and 28 February 1885 (see Completion of the concentrated position (March 1885) and Toekoe Tjoet Toengkoep).
