A fourth principle was travel without military escort, a hobby-horse of Swart’s and a conception Van Daalen did not share; Van Daalen even forbade administrators to visit their territory without military cover. In 1902 this had already caused friction between Swart as gezaghebber in Lho’ Kroeët and Daja and Van Daalen as his assistant resident. Van Daalen noted the prohibition on Swart’s journal; Van Heutsz in his turn noted “that Swart could judge this better than he or I could, that appreciation ought to be shown from higher authority in the matter, and that there could be no question of a prohibition where Swart was concerned.”

In 1902 Van Daalen, as Swart’s assistant resident, forbade administrators to visit their territory without military escort and noted that prohibition on Swart’s journal, when Swart was gezaghebber in Lho’ Kroeët and Daja. Van Heutsz in turn noted “that Swart could judge this better than he or I could, that appreciation ought to be shown from higher authority in the matter, and that there could be no question of a prohibition where Swart was concerned.”

In 1902 Swart, as gezaghebber in Lho’ Kroeët and Daja, was forbidden by Van Daalen to travel without military escort, a prohibition van Heutsz overruled. In 1914 the murder of W. van Kregten at Lam No on 20 May set off the resistance in Daja and Lhong; the united bands of Nja’ Ali and Nja’ Asém were destroyed by lieutenant Snell at the holy grave near the mouth of the Daja-rivier on 5 August 1914. The flare-up of resistance in the Daja districts was one of the three heavy blows du Croo names as having tested Swart’s composure.
