W. van Kregten was the Dutch 1ste luitenant and Civil Authority murdered with two soldiers at Lam No in the Daja country on 20 May 1914.
He was killed by a band of twelve men armed with rentjong and klewang from the landschappen Lam No, Panté Tjeureumèn, Djeunamprong and Oenga, who fled to the mountains with the soldiers’ weapons. The night quarters had been chosen and occupied “in the most utterly careless manner”, the weapons of both soldiers lying on the floor of two different unwalled rooms; in the morning, while the soldiers had left their weapons to drink coffee and the lieutenant was innocently winding his puttees, Si Ali and four others attacked him. The cause lay in the dismissal of Si Ali, at Van Kregten’s instigation, from his post as mandoer of a coconut garden, and in a personal grudge against the oelèëbalang of Lambeusdë. Du Croo added the note: “Van Kregten was a quiet, calm, well-balanced man.”
