Toekoe Oemar was an Atjehsche chief connected with the Tenom coast, who figures in the Koloniaal Verslag (Colonial Report) and, after it, in Verstege’s 1886 pamphlet as the author of the treachery at Lambesi of 3 July 1884. Toekoe Oemar had promised to free the English shipwrecked men held by the Tenomsche (the same affair as the attempted enlistment of Teukoe Oemar to free the Nisero-ship’s prisoners of the same summer); landed at Lambesi, he surprised the unsuspecting crew of the Dutch war sloop, killed seven of them, and made himself master of all the weapons. “Na dit feit heeft TOEKOE OEMAR volgens het Verslag ons weder ijverig in Groot Atjeh bestookt” — after this deed Toekoe Oemar, as the report states, again zealously harassed the Dutch in Groot-Atjeh. Verstege cited the case as evidence for the Atjehsche way of answering “peaceable approaches” with betrayal, in the month of the secret decision on the concentration (see Concentration decision (16-17 June 1884)).
