Account from Verstege’s Een beroep op het Nederlandsche volk (1886)
Verstege — after the Koloniaal Verslag — gives the measure its result in blood, in the same months: on 3 July 1884 the Atjehnese Toekoe Oemar, who had promised to deliver the English castaways held by the Tenomsche, was landed at Lambesi with captured English flag-blinkered expectations, and “overrompelde de geen kwaad vermoedende bemanning onzer oorlogssloep, 7 hunner doodde, en zich van alle wapens meester maakte” (“surprised the crew of our war sloop that suspected no evil, killed seven of them, and made himself master of all the weapons”): the same palm-court as the request and its failing English answer narrated above, in the month of the secret decision on the concentration. “Na dit feit heeft TOEKOE OEMAR volgens het Verslag ons weder ijverig in Groot Atjeh bestookt” (“After this deed Toekoe Oemar, according to the report, again zealously harassed us in Groot-Atjeh”) — and three weeks later Imam Habib repeated the lesson near Tjot-Goe (ambush of 29 July 1884) (see Lambesi treachery (3 July 1884)).
