The treachery of Lambesi was the act by which Toekoe Oemar, an Atjehsche chief who had promised to procure the liberation of the English shipwrecked men then held by the Tenomsche (see Nisero affair (1883–1885) and the attempted enlistment of Teukoe Oemar of the same summer), destroyed the unsuspecting crew of a Dutch war sloop. Landed at Lambesi, he overwhelmed the landing party that suspected no evil, killed seven of them, and made himself master of all the weapons. The fact, recorded in the Koloniaal Verslag, was quoted by Verstege in 1886 among the proofs that “the continuous attempts from our side to knit and maintain peaceable relations with chiefs and population are only answered with betrayal” — in the very month in which the government had secretly decided upon the concentration of Atjeh. After this deed, the report adds, Toekoe Oemar again zealously harassed the Dutch in Groot-Atjeh.
