Imam Habib (printed in the pamphlet as “Imam Hab”) was an Atjehsche chief who was reckoned among the Dutch-friendly heads and was a deliverer (leverancier) of supplies, but who — as the Koloniaal Verslag recorded and Verstege cited in 1886 — had his followers unexpectedly attack a Dutch patrol of 27 bayonets on its return march to Tjot-Goe on 29 July 1884. Nine men were killed, eight wounded, and ten rifles with ammunition were taken as booty. The act, committed in the same month in which Toekoe Oemar had deceived and destroyed the landing party at Lambesi (3 July 1884), was quoted by Verstege as proof of how the “continuous attempts from the Dutch side to knit and maintain peaceable relations with chiefs and population were only answered with betrayal” — the month of the secret decision on the concentration (see Concentration decision (16-17 June 1884)).
