Toekoe Nja Mohamad was one of the Atjehsche grooten (great chiefs or notables) who was with the contrôleur Tadema at Oleh-leh in December 1875 when the newly arrived Majoor Romswinckel asked for a vessel for his baggage. In the manuscript of Kroesen, quoted by Verstege in 1886, Toekoe Nja Mohamad hailed a countryman standing at a distance to obtain a sampan, and received the cool answer that the man had no vessel himself but knew a way to get one: “Laat mij naar den overkant gaan, ik ken daar iemand die wel een sampan heeft, ik zal hem voorstellen om samen als het donker is naar Poeloe Bras te gaan, en vermoord hem onderweg” (“Let me go to the other side, I know someone there who does have a sampan; I shall propose him to go together, when it is dark, to Poeloe Bras, and murder him underway”). Kroesen adds: “De man zei dat met een gelaat, waarop zelfvoldoening stond te lezen over een zoo gelukkigen inval, en was zeer teleurgesteld toen zijn welgemeend aanbod niet werd aangenomen” (“The man said it with a face on which self-satisfaction could be read at so happy a thought, and was very disappointed when his well-meant offer was not accepted”). Together with the frankness about coercion by the klewang, the story was adduced by Kroesen to show with what people the Dutch had to deal at Atjeh. (Not to be confused with Toekoe Nja Mohammad, the head of the IX Moekims of the alliance period 1893-1896.)
