Majoor Romswinckel (also read as Riomswinckel) was a major of the Netherlands Indies Army who arrived at Atjeh in December 1875. In the manuscript of the contrôleur Kroesen — quoted by Verstege in his 1886 pamphlet — the major figures in the opening of the sampan incident that Kroesen gave as a small but telling specimen of the Atjehnese character: newly arrived at Atjeh, Romswinckel asked the contrôleur Tadema at Oleh-leh to help him to a vessel for his baggage; Tadema turned to Toekoe Nja Mohamad, one of the Atjehnese greats who happened to be with him, who hailed a countryman for a sampan and received, as Kroesen recorded with astonishment, the answer from which Dutch readers would learn something of the morals of the people against whom they were at war (see Toekoe Nja Mohamad (Oleh-leh 1875) for the anecdote itself).
