28 October is the date on which, in 1926, the Vereeniging „SIMAVI” — Steun In Medische Aangelegenheden Voor Inheemschen — received royal approval as an association under Netherlands law.
The statement printed on the second page of Een strijd in Atjeh (1934) reads: “VEREENIGING S.I.M.A.V.I (Steun In medische Aangelegenheden Voor Inheemschen). Koninklijk goedgekeurd 28 October 1926.”
The association’s object was the provision of medical help to, and the spiritual elevation of, the indigenous population of the Netherlands East and West Indies, in the sense in which these had hitherto been put into practice by the Protestant Medical Mission. It was SIMAVI that published in 1934 the letters of C. Graadt van Roggen on the Atjeh eye-surgery campaigns of Dr. J. Tijssen.
