Mars (island), known locally as Pulau Mars, was a small island at the mouth of the Rivier van Riouw (Riau River) that featured a fort and served as a focal point of the Dutch 1784 operations against Salangore and Riouw.
Geographic Features
The island was divided by a river that split the settlement of Salangore into two parts and was defended by a fort on an elevated position, a lower earthwork, and a beach battery covering the whole shore.
Military Action
During the Dutch landing, the fleet under Van Braam (commander) engaged enemy vessels gathered near the island. Later, on 28 October 1784, a Dutch ultimatum was delivered to the local ruler from the island’s fortifications.
