Radya Aly was a Buginese (Boeginees) chieftain who assumed the title of “onderkoning” (under‑king) of Riouw after the death of his brother‑in‑law Radya Hadgè in 1784. He opposed the Dutch Oost-Indische Compagnie and was the target of an ultimatum issued by Van Braam (commander) on 28 October 1784.
Rise to Power
Following the killing of Radya Hadgè, Radya Aly seized control of the Riau throne, proclaiming himself underking. His rule was marked by hostility toward the Dutch, who considered him “Compagnie vijandig gezind” (hostile to the Company).
Dutch Ultimatum and Defeat
Van Braam sent an ultimatum demanding Radya Aly’s surrender; the deadline was set for the sunrise of the following day. When the ultimatum expired, Dutch forces launched a decisive attack, leading to Aly’s flight on the night of 30 October‑31 October 1784.
Aftermath
After Aly’s escape, a peace treaty was concluded with the young legitimate prince Mahmoed of Riouw, restoring a pro‑Company ruler.
