Mahmoed (young prince of Riouw) was the legitimate heir to the throne of Riouw who, after the flight of Radya Aly, entered into a peace treaty with the Dutch commander Van Braam (commander) on 31 October 1784.
Restoration of a Pro‑Company Ruler
Mahmoed sent a white flag to Van Braam, signalling his willingness to negotiate. The resulting treaty reinstated his authority under Dutch suzerainty, ending the brief Buginese‑led resistance.
Significance
The treaty with Mahmoed secured Dutch control over the Riau archipelago and paved the way for further Dutch expansion toward Aceh and the surrounding regions.
