1932 was the year in which the author first met Dominee Thenu on the beach of Bakongan — “De eerste maal, dat ik Dominee Thenu ontmoette, was eind 1932 op het strand van Bakongan.” Thenu was then “al vierenzestig” years old. The year is the book’s marker of the beginning of the author’s personal acquaintance with the Soldaten-Dominee.
Publication of Het recht op den grond in Atjeh (5 January 1932)
The instalments of D. W. N. de Boer’s study Het recht op den grond in Atjeh appeared in print in 1932, across pages 59 to 80 of a Netherlands-Indies colonial periodical. The running head of page 65 of the offprint carries the notation “1932 Januari 5,” fixing the instalment containing that page to 5 January 1932.
The study itself had been completed and signed at Scheveningen in November 1931. The offprint, catalogued as DLP-141, entered the library of the Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde at Galewstraat 159, ‘s-Gravenhage, where it bears the address stamp of the institute and the accession marks “BIBLIOTHEEK KITLV 0060 4460 60 081470 428.” It remains one of the few systematic descriptions of Atjehnese customary land law written from the bench rather than the study, preserving a body of technical Atjehnese legal vocabulary — haq radja taléë, thiplah tano, haq toeleuèng, padé kandoeri, aboen meu’oeë, atra peunoelang — not recorded in comparable detail elsewhere.

1932 was the year of publication of Ir. W. Spoon’s Atjeh Patchouli-Olie — Bericht No. 71 of the Afdeeling Handelsmuseum of the Kon. Vereeniging Koloniaal Instituut, reprinted from De Indische Mercuur of 20 July 1932. The pamphlet is the second of Spoon’s two Berichten on the patchouli industry of Atjeh, the first being Bericht No. 21 of May 1925. Together they form the principal printed source for the early history of the patchouli-oil industry in Atjeh.
