The Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde (Royal Institute of Linguistics, Geography and Ethnology) was the Netherlands learned society and library, seated at Galewstraat 159 in ‘s-Gravenhage, whose collections preserved the offprint of Het recht op den grond in Atjeh by D. W. N. de Boer, catalogued as DLP-141 and bearing the accession marks “BIBLIOTHEEK KITLV 0060 4460 60 081470 428.”
Role in the transmission of the Atjehnese land-law literature
The institute’s library was the repository through which the technical literature on the adat of the Netherlands Indies — including the Atjehnese material of C. Snouck Hurgronje, C. van Vollenhoven and De Boer — was collected, catalogued and made available for comparative study. The stamped address and shelf marks on the De Boer offprint record the passage of the study from the colonial periodical press into the scholarly apparatus of adatrecht research in the Netherlands.
Significance
The survival of De Boer’s study, a short practitioner’s paper printed in a periodical, depended on the institute’s practice of acquiring and binding offprints of colonial scholarship. The Atjeh-related holdings so preserved constitute a substantial part of the surviving documentation of Atjehnese customary land law.
