1672 marks the Rampjaar, when the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) faced coordinated attacks by England, France, and Munster following the secret Treaty of Dover (1670). The crisis weakened Dutch naval power, reducing the protection of VOC shipping to the Sultanate of Aceh and other overseas possessions.
