Staten van Holland was the provincial assembly of the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) that, from the mid‑17th century, exercised authority over the appointment of military commanders and the allocation of war‑time subsidies. After the death of Willem II, the Staten van Holland opposed the Crown’s attempt to install a new army chief, contributing to the decline of Dutch military readiness during the Disaster Year 1672.
Role in Colonial Administration
The Staten van Holland held the right to grant pardons to military officials, a practice that led to “knoeierij” (corruption) and the deterioration of the VOC’s effectiveness in the Sultanate of Aceh. Their decisions influenced the staffing of the VOC’s factories on the Aceh coast.
