Staten der Provinciën was the collective assembly of the seven provinces of the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) that, from 1651, assumed supreme authority over the militia and the right to pardon military officials. This centralisation contributed to administrative “knoeierij” and the weakening of the VOC’s grip on the Sultanate of Aceh during the Disaster Year1672.

Legislative Powers

The Staten der Provinciën could grant clemency to officers, a prerogative that was abused, leading to a decline in military discipline and the neglect of fortifications in Dutch overseas holdings, including Aceh’s strategic ports.
