Rampjaar (1672), known in English as the Disaster Year, was the year in which the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) faced simultaneous invasions by England, France, and Munster, following the secret Treaty of Dover (1670). The Republic’s military collapse weakened its capacity to defend overseas interests, including the VOC’s trade routes to the Sultanate of Aceh.
Impact on Southeast Asian Trade
The diversion of naval forces to European waters reduced Dutch protection of merchant ships sailing to Aceh, allowing rival European powers to seek footholds in the region and challenging the monopoly the VOC had enjoyed.
