1670 is notable for the secret Treaty of Dover (1670) signed on 3 December 1670 between England and France, in which Charles II of England received a two‑million‑livre subsidy from Louis XIV. The treaty’s clandestine nature contributed to the Disaster Year 1672 and disrupted the VOC’s protection of its trade routes to the Sultanate of Aceh.
