Louis XIV was the King of France whose aggressive foreign policy in the 1660s and 1670s prompted the formation of the Triple Alliance (1668) and the secret Treaty of Dover (1670) with England. His ambitions threatened the United Provinces (Dutch Republic), weakening Dutch capacity to protect its interests in the Sultanate of Aceh and other Asian trading posts.

Louis XIV’s conquest of parts of Flanders and Franche‑Comté in 1667 alarmed the Republic, leading to diplomatic realignments that indirectly affected the balance of power in the Indian Ocean, where the VOC competed for Aceh’s pepper.
