Triple Alliance (1668) was the diplomatic pact signed in 1668 between the United Provinces (Dutch Republic), England, and Sweden, negotiated by Johan de Witt, William Temple, and Graf von Dohna. The alliance aimed to check the expansionist policies of Louis XIV and to preserve the balance of power in Europe, indirectly safeguarding Dutch maritime trade with the Sultanate of Aceh.
Provisions and Significance
The treaty stipulated mutual defence against French aggression and coordinated naval patrols, which helped maintain Dutch control over sea lanes used by VOC ships en route to Aceh.
